Steerwell started in 2017 with a simple observation: too many people in Malaysia were stranded without a vehicle when they needed one most. Whether it was a car in the workshop with no clear return date, a cross-border trip with complicated paperwork, or a desire to explore the country behind the wheel — the options available were either overpriced, poorly maintained, or difficult to arrange.

We set up our first office on Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur with a fleet of eight vehicles and a small team that answered calls directly. The idea was to keep things personal and practical. No layers of call centres or confusing tier structures — just a conversation about what you need, when you need it, and how we can make it happen.

Over the years, the fleet has grown and the services have expanded, but the approach hasn't changed. We still prepare every vehicle the same way before each rental: tyres checked, fluids topped up, cabin cleaned, air conditioning tested. We still walk clients through the paperwork rather than burying it in emails. And we still pick up the phone when something goes wrong on the road.

Our focus today spans three core services — cross-border rentals for the busy Malaysia–Singapore corridor, replacement vehicles for those waiting on repairs, and self-drive touring packages for travellers who want to see Malaysia on their own terms. Each of these came from listening to what drivers actually asked for, not from boardroom strategy sessions.
